Guilhermina Amade, a resident of Nacala Porto, is an example of perseverance and overcoming in the fight against multidrug-resistant TB. When she first fell ill, she traveled to seek treatment in the city of Nampula, specifically in Marrere, where she was diagnosed with tuberculosis and began her treatment. After some time, she returned to the city of Nacala Porto, where she continued her treatment at the Urban Hospital until she was declared cured.
Unfortunately, Guilhermina later began to feel pain in her ribs again and was once again diagnosed with TB. At that point, she was introduced to an activist from the Local TB project, who still supports her today.
“Since I started being accompanied by the activist from the USAID-funded Local TB project, I feel that the treatment has changed for the better, thanks to the regular visits and constant counseling I receive. In addition, the greater involvement of my family, who help me with everything I can't do on my own, has been fundamental.”
I've learned that taking tuberculosis medication must be careful and rigorous, you can't postpone any day, as this can create instability in the body and lead to a relapse. The activist's presence is essential, as he brings the medication to my house. My husband works with him, helping me to control my pill intake and to keep in touch with the activist whenever necessary.
One of the great things we learned from the activist, and which changed the way our family was treated, was to discover that there was no need to separate utensils and other possessions. This knowledge has brought us more comfort and normality in our daily lives.”
