The Role of Godparents is Fundamental to TB Patient Medication Uptake

2024-07-19

Domingos Ernesto, a resident and activist in his own community, Vida Nova, in Nacala-à-Velha, is a shining example of TB eradication activism. Domingos dedicates himself to the daily follow-up of TB patients and collaborates closely with the “godparents” of these patients to ensure greater rigor in the taking of medication, which significantly facilitates his intervention.

“I follow up around 20 patients within a 30 km radius, with the goal of visiting at least three of them every day. With the help of the 'godparents', my work becomes easier, and their involvement encourages patients never to give up on treatment,” explains Domingos.

The patients' gratitude is the greatest reward for him.“My greatest satisfaction is seeing the gratitude in the patients' eyes when they receive another dose of medication and especially when we celebrate their cure.As a way of saying thank you, some patients organize get-togethers where I'm the guest of honour, sharing these special moments with their families.”

Domingos' goal is clear and inspiring: to eradicate TB in the Vida Nova community. His dedication and commitment, together with the essential support of his “godparents,” are key to achieving this goal and bringing hope and health to many.
