Juliana João, a resident of the Vida Nova community in Nacala-à-Velha, is a TB patient. Her case was discovered during the house-to-house screening carried out by the activist project Local TB Response. When the activist approached her, he immediately suspected tuberculosis, which was confirmed three days later by the laboratory results.

“I had been suffering for over two months with back pain and insomnia.Every time I went to the health unit, they diagnosed malaria. When I presented my symptoms to the activist, he suspected it might be TB and invited me to take the test. The result was positive.

”Juliana started treatment immediately, as her health was poor.“The most interesting thing is the presence of the activist, who brings the medication to my house. This way, I don't have to spend money on transportation, which would be a big barrier.”

Sadly, she says that since she fell ill, she has had to give up her daily routine and spend most of her time lying down, without the strength to help her husband produce charcoal, his main source of income. However, the activist's continued support not only facilitates her treatment, but also offers hope to her family, who want her back in their daily lives
